GORDI SIGNS TO LIBERATION MUSIC AND DEBUTS NEW SINGLE ‘WANTING’ FROM HER CLEVER DISGUISE EP OUT MAY 13
“Gordi’s EP is a work of absolute splendour that is almost certain to make her a star” – Stereogum
“Breezy, wintry melancholy at its finest” – The Guardian
“A song to score a daydream” – Pigeons & Planes
Liberation Music are over the moon to welcome Gordi to the family. With her debut EP set for release on May 13, the Sydney-via-Canowindra artist – also known as Sophie Payten – recently put pen to paper to mark her affiliation to the label for Australia and New Zealand. She joins an eclectic roster of acts including Adalita, Dan Sultan, Emma Louise, Slum Sociable, The Temper Trap and Vance Joy.
The six songs on Gordi’s Clever Disguise EP are the culmination of her prolific songwriting and work with producers Ben McCarthy (Megan Washington), Alex Somers (Sigur Ros) and Francois Tetaz (Gotye). Clever Disguise is ambitious, big pop that doesn’t give an inch of artistic concession, where wistful aching and longing can almost feel like a spirited celebration.
The EP – which will continue to carry the label branding of Payten’s own imprint Hey Alfalfa – features past singles and alternative radio favourites ‘Nothing’s As It Seems’ and ‘Can We Work It Out’, alongside exquisite new offering ‘Wanting’ (out this Friday April 22). ‘Wanting’ , was produced by the esteemed Alex Somers and premiered last night by Richard Kingsmill on triple j.
In the lead up to the release of Clever Disguise, Gordi will appear at Groovin The Moo in Canberra and tour with Of Monsters And Men (April/ May).
Signed to the highly sought after Jagjaguwar label overseas, and with international fans already aplenty (including Stereogum who recently named her an ‘Artist to Watch’), Gordi will continue to draw in global audiences as she embarks on a run of live performances throughout the UK, US and Canada with her three-piece band. The UK appearances will see her grace the stage of The Great Escape Festival and support acclaimed Norwegian indie pop act, Highasakite, before she crosses to The Americas to perform at Sasquatch Festival (helmed by Florence & The Machine, The Cure, Jamie XX) and headline a short string of dates from San Francisco to New York.
Gordi was last year nominated for a triple j J Award along with two FBi SMAC Awards.
