Vance Joy’s love of music was inspired by his mother’s aptitude at literature and his father’s fondness of singing. His parents’ vast, eclectic record collection only served to heighten his partiality to it – while he was growing up he would listen to everything from The Pogues to Paul Kelly. After completing a university degree in law, he decided to take a year’s break to focus on making music. He travelled to India and South-East Asia with a collection of songs rattling around in his head. When he came home, they all fell into place.
The songs formed Vance Joy’s debut EP, God Loves You When You’re Dancing. Since releasing the EP in March 2013, things have happened quickly for the Melbourne artist, with both local and international fans falling for his poetic lyrics, exquisite vocals and heartfelt melodies.
The EP, which includes ‘Riptide’, ‘Play With Fire’ and ‘From Afar’, has struck a chord locally, achieving GOLD accreditation in Australia. The lead, Top 10 ARIA single, ‘Riptide’, which took out the #1 song on triple J’s Hottest 100 Countdown earlier this year and was equally adored by commercial radio, is now 4x PLATINUM, having sold in excess of 300,000 units – no small feat for an artist in today’s musical climate. In addition to strong record sales, there have been AIR Award wins and ARIA nominations, huge international supports and sold-out headline shows, festival appearances at Laneway and Groovin’ The Moo, and all the while, growing accolades, acclaim and universal love.
The year ahead is only going to get brighter for Vance Joy, with a debut album due for release over the coming months.
